Tender Mercies at the D.I.

David A. Bednar defined Tender Mercies as this: The Lord’s tender mercies are the very personal and individualized blessings, strength, protection, assurances, guidance, loving-kindnesses, consolation, support, and spiritual gifts which we receive from and because of and through the Lord Jesus Christ. (David A. Bednar, “The Tender Mercies of the Lord,” Ensign, May 2005, 99)

You may wonder, how Heidi is finding tender mercies at the D.I. ? Well, I find tender mercies everywhere and they aren't always in ways that others may agree to be "tender mercies", and that is why tender mercies are "very personal" as Elder Bednar observed.

For a few weeks before, I had been looking for some things that reminded me of my childhood. 1970's Correlle butterfly plates and vintage goblets to be specific. These things, although possessions, had very warm and fond memories attached to them. I looked and looked. Every time I went to the D.I., I looked but came up empty. I found some of these things online, but they were very expensive and weren't in my budget.

One day I was really down and discouraged. Tom was home so I decided to venture out on my own and go the the D.I. like I had every week on Tom's day off. I walked down the dishes aisle and to my surprise, I found a tall stack of my butterfly plates for 50 cents a piece. I was giddy.  I decided to buy 6 that looked like they were in good condition. As I continued to walk around, I noticed an avocado green glass teacup with the same pattern the goblets had that I been wanting online. I looked around some more. To my pleasant surprise I discovered a matching teacup hiding on a cart at the end of an aisle. They were selling them for 75 cents each. I was so completely thrilled and couldn't leave without purchasing those little treasures as well.

I walked away from the D.I. that day, completely rejuvenated and feeling loved. And although I didn't find exactly what I was looking for, I considered those small things tender mercies from my Heavenly Father. He was saying to me, "I see you. I  know you. I am aware of you."

Each time I have gone back to the D.I. hoping to find more plates and goblets to complete my set, I have not even found one plate, goblet, or teacup. And that's okay. Because that one day, when I really needed it, Heavenly Father let me know that I was loved.
