the dolls

My Grandma Van loved dolls. She had many that we would play with when we were little girls and it was one of my favorite things to do. But I loved going to Grandma's because each time I would visit her she would take me to her room and give me a new doll to take home. These dolls weren't terribly fancy. They weren't made of porcelain or other fine materials but I loved them. They each had a unique personality and look as if they came from countries all over the world. At one point in my life I had them all displayed up on a shelf in my bedroom. As the years passed those dolls took up residence in a box and moved to my closet shelf.

When my parents made the move from California to Utah the dolls moved with them and found a place in a corner of their basement. And there they sat for several years until last year when we moved to our home in Kaysville and the dolls came with us. They didn't draw much attention and remained in their box un-played with and unnoticed until last week when Miss Savannah and Miss Jane discovered them. And let me tell you, this was a discovery of seismic proportions! They could not believe what they had found! The dolls came out one by one, being carefully examined and given great attention.

The next day Savannah asked if she could bring the dolls upstairs. That's when I told her the story of who gave me the dolls and how special they were to me. To which Savannah asked, "do you think that Grandma could give me some special dolls?" When I explained to her that Grandma Van was no longer with us she asked, "Well when she's not dead anymore could she give me some dolls?" I laughed and told her that she could have my dolls as long as she took care of them. This made her really happy and a few hours later I walked into her room to make this discovery:

For some reason it reminded me of It's a Small World. Isn't it funny that after all these years of being forgotten that something so little can bring so much joy?
